What happens when you change the process?

Receive a production situation, make the decisions, and see the likely preservation consequences. There is no quiz score: the aim is to understand why the process behaves as it does.

Training model

Plant recipes, approved chemicals, health and safety controls and validated operating procedures always take precedence.

Make your decisions, then run the load.

The result will explain the likely outcome, what worked, and what deserves another look.

Evidence Explorer

The simulator uses broad teaching rules. These graphs show the experimental and published evidence behind two of the most important ideas: protection takes time, and drainage continues after the drum stops.

PUBLISHED HIDE DATA · TEACHING CURVE

Salt uptake and the vulnerable lag

Salt lowers water activity, but protection is not instantaneous. In the cited brining example, whole-hide salt saturation did not approach the ~90% teaching target until after several hours.

Why it matters
Freshness, good preparation and appropriate biocide matter while salt is still penetrating.
LASRA EXPERIMENTAL DATA

Liquid drainage after drum salting

Seven woolly lamb skins continued to release liquid for weeks. Almost 400 mL per skin drained in total; about half was released in the first 2–3 days and roughly 75% by day 7.

LASRA drainage trial: seven woolly lamb skins; drum salted 1 hour with 45% salt, 0.5% citric acid and 0.08% UTec G. The values shown are trial-specific and are used here to teach the process principle, not as universal plant specifications.

Production Challenge

NO SCORE · JUST A PROBLEM

Give me a production problem.

PRESERVE will generate a deliberately awkward load. Diagnose it using the same controls in the simulator and see whether your changes improve the outcome.

04

What did you learn?

NOW

At unloading

What would you look for immediately after the drum?

LATER

During storage

What signs might tell you that preservation was incomplete or uneven?

DOWNSTREAM

At processing

How could an early preservation failure appear much later?

THE PRINCIPLE

The preservation chain

1

Control deterioration early

Time, temperature and moisture begin affecting the skin before preservation starts.

2

Make preservation work everywhere

Preparation, distribution, penetration and drum conditions determine whether treatment reaches the whole skin.

3

Protect the result

Drainage, storage and transport remain part of preservation after the drum has stopped.
